Do I qualify for a prescription?
The use of medications for weight management is indicated for those patients who have a BMI of 30 or higher or a BMI of 27 or higher with other medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol. What is Semaglutide?
Semaglutide is a peptide that mimics a hormone called glucagon-like petide-1 (GLP-1) that targets the brain to reduce hunger and regulate appetite by decreasing food intake. It also targets the GI tract by triggering the release of insulin to block sugar production, slows emptying of the stomach, that in return signals the brain of fullness. Reduced hunger and food intake in combination with diet and exercise help individuals lose an average of one to two pounds a week, up to 20 pounds first three months, and 50 pounds after 6 months.
What is Tirzepatide?
Tirzepatide is the peptide that is also in the GLP-1 class of drugs and works similar to semaglutide, but current studies show people lose more weight on tirzepatide than semaglutide, however this drug is more expensive .
Side Effects
Most common side effects include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and constipation.
Less common but serious side effects include: Pancreatitis, Gallbladder issues, Renal Failure, Gastric paralysis, hypoglycemia, or allergic reactions
Contraindications
Contraindications: Family or personal history of medullary thyroid carcinoma, multiple endocrine neoplasia syndrome type 2, or hypersensitivity. It should be used with caution if personal history of pancreatitis
